Routine vet visit cost

A routine visit usually means a physical exam plus any vaccines that are due. Prices vary by clinic and region, so treat these as typical ranges, not quotes.

Service Dog Cat
Wellness exam $65-$150 $50-$150
Vaccines (each) $15-$50 $25-$50
Full visit with vaccines and tests $70-$250+ $70-$250+

Rover’s 2026 cat cost report lands in the same range, with an annual vet exam at $80 to $200 and a typical office visit around $80. Pawlicy, citing the AVMA, says owners spent an average of about $214 per routine visit for dogs and $138 for cats in 2025.

Over a full year, the bill is higher because many pets visit more than once. APPA data cited by NerdWallet shows what owners spent on average across the year for each type of visit:

Visit type Dog Cat
Routine $285 $215
Sick $285 $246
Emergency $451 $343
Surgical $505 $338
Specialty $326 $238

Vaccines, preventives and first visits

Puppies and kittens visit the vet most in their first months, for a series of shots, a parasite check and often a microchip. Adult pets usually need boosters every one to three years, plus ongoing parasite prevention.

Item Typical cost
First visit (puppy or kitten) $100-$300
Puppy vaccine, per dose $20-$65
Kitten vaccine, per dose $20-$45
Heartworm test (dogs) $35-$75
Fecal exam $25-$75
Feline leukemia (FeLV) test $60-$120
Flea and tick prevention $20-$30 per month
Heartworm prevention $30-$100+

Source: Adopt a Pet, Jul 2025.

Monthly flea and tick prevention adds $240 to $360 a year (our calculation), which is often more than the exam itself. Rover’s 2026 cat report puts flea prevention at $200 to $310 a year, a similar range.

What a year of routine care can cost

Here is one example for a healthy adult dog, using the ranges above and Pawlicy’s exam price.

Item Low High
Wellness exam $65 $150
Two vaccines $30 $100
Heartworm test $35 $75
Flea and tick prevention (12 months) $240 $360
Total $370 $685

Our calculation, based on Pawlicy Advisor (Sep 2026) and Adopt a Pet (Jul 2025) prices. Heartworm prevention is extra.

Tests and diagnostics

When your pet is sick, the exam fee is often the smallest line on the bill. Diagnostics add up fast.

Test Typical range (Pawlicy) Average dog (CareCredit) Average cat (CareCredit)
Blood count (CBC) $80-$400 (bloodwork) $104 $79
Chemistry panel Included above $164 $144
Urine culture n/a $78 $94
X-rays $75-$400 $334 (ER, 2-3 views) $310 (ER, 2-3 views)
Ultrasound $300-$800 $483 $323
MRI $1,500-$7,500 n/a n/a

Sources: Pawlicy Advisor, Sep 2026; CareCredit 2025 and 2026 cost studies.

A sick visit that includes an exam, a blood count and a chemistry panel would come to about $403 for a dog at CareCredit’s averages (our calculation: $135 exam plus $104 plus $164), before any medication.

Emergency vet visit cost

Emergency clinics charge more because they are open nights and weekends and staffed for critical care. CareCredit’s 2025 study puts the average emergency exam at:

  • Dogs: $135 (range $107 to $246)
  • Cats: $143 (range $113 to $260)

State averages for dogs run from $108 in Mississippi to $241 in Hawaii, and for cats from $115 in West Virginia to $257 in Hawaii. The exam is just the start:

Emergency treatment Dog Cat
Hospitalization, per night $619 $582
IV catheter and fluids $130 $121
Upset stomach treatment $390 $234
Severe diarrhea treatment $1,455 $945
Stomach blockage surgery $2,217 $2,367
Bladder stone removal $2,331 $2,096

Source: CareCredit, 2025 and 2026 cost studies, May 2026.

Critical care costs even more. CareCredit lists oxygen therapy at $1,528 per visit for a large dog and $1,861 for a cat, and pyometra (a serious uterine infection) surgery at $1,218 for dogs and $2,116 for cats. A single night in the hospital plus an emergency exam already comes to $754 for a dog (our calculation: $135 plus $619).

Pawlicy’s ranges show how high serious cases can go: $3,000 to $7,000 for a swallowed object and $2,000 to $7,500 for bloat in dogs.

Dental care and surgery

Procedure Dog Cat
Teeth cleaning $500-$2,000 $200-$1,500
Spay $400-$800 $200-$600
Neuter $300-$700 $50-$400
Lipoma (fatty lump) removal $200-$1,000 $200-$1,000

Source: Pawlicy Advisor, Sep 2026.

Spay and neuter surgery is often far cheaper at shelters and nonprofit clinics than at private practices, so it pays to ask around.

How to pay less at the vet

  1. Keep up with wellness visits. A $65 to $150 exam can catch dental disease or weight problems before they need surgery.
  2. Ask for an estimate before treatment. Clinics can usually give a written estimate, and you can ask which tests are urgent and which can wait.
  3. Use low-cost clinics for vaccines. Many shelters and pet stores host vaccine clinics at lower prices than a full office visit.
  4. Compare a regular vet with urgent care. For problems that are not life threatening, a next-day appointment can cost less than an after-hours ER.
  5. Plan for the big bill. A pet insurance policy or a dedicated savings fund can turn a $2,000 surprise into a manageable cost. Our emergency fund calculator can help you set a target.
