How much a new car battery costs
Every gas car, hybrid and EV has a 12-volt battery that starts the car or powers its electronics. Two well-known repair estimators put the installed price at:
| Source | Battery (parts) | Labor | Total installed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jerry | $200-$300+ | $39-$117+ | $268-$368 |
| RepairPal | $394-$403 | $61-$90 | $456-$493 |
| AAA | n/a | n/a | $100-$300 (battery) |
Source: Jerry, Apr 2026; RepairPal, Sep 2026; AAA.
The gap comes from what each one measures. Jerry’s figure includes the battery, installation and disposal of the old one. RepairPal’s estimate is a shop repair price before taxes and fees, and does not adjust for your location. AAA’s $100 to $300 range is for the battery itself.
In every case, the battery is most of the bill. In Jerry’s numbers, the battery accounts for roughly 75% to 82% of the installed price (our calculation). Labor is often under $120, because a battery swap is one of the quickest jobs a shop does.
What drives the price
- Battery type. Standard flooded lead-acid batteries are the cheapest. AGM and EFB batteries, used in many newer cars, cost more, per Jerry.
- Size and power. A larger battery, higher cold cranking amps or a longer warranty adds about $20 to $60, according to Jerry.
- Where the battery sits. If it is in the trunk, under a seat or behind trim panels instead of under the hood, Jerry says labor can rise by $30 to $120.
- Where you buy it. Auto parts stores, warehouse clubs, independent shops and dealers all price differently, so compare the installed total.
How long a car battery lasts
A regular 12-volt battery lasts about three to five years, according to both Jerry and AAA. Over 12 to 15 years of ownership, AAA estimates repeat 12-volt replacements add up to roughly $300 to $1,500.
Common signs it is time: a slow, sluggish start, a battery warning light, dim headlights at idle, or a battery older than about three years that struggles in cold or very hot weather. Many parts stores and repair shops will test a battery before you buy.
EV and hybrid battery replacement cost
Electric cars have two batteries: the small 12-volt battery covered above and a large high-voltage pack that drives the car. Replacing the big pack is a major repair. AAA puts it at $5,000 to $20,000 or more, and NerdWallet gives the same $5,000 to about $20,000 range plus labor.
| EV battery pack size | Replacement cost (parts and labor) |
|---|---|
| 20-30 kWh | $4,000-$9,000 |
| 40-60 kWh | $7,000-$14,000 |
| 75-100 kWh | $10,000-$18,000 |
| 100+ kWh | $15,000-$25,000+ |

Pack size is the main driver, so smaller, older EVs cost less to fix. AAA gives two examples: a Nissan Leaf battery runs about $5,000 to $16,000, while a Rivian R1T pack runs about $15,000 to $25,000 or more. For context on parts prices, AAA reports that packs built for battery-electric vehicles averaged $99 per kilowatt-hour in 2025.
To put that in perspective, a $5,000 to $20,000 EV pack replacement costs roughly 14 to 75 times as much as a regular 12-volt battery at Jerry’s $268 to $368 installed price (our calculation). That is why the warranty terms below matter so much when you buy a used EV.
AAA says EV-certified shops charge about $175 to $250 or more per hour, so labor alone can total $1,000 to $3,000 or more.
The good news is that full pack replacements are uncommon:
- Long warranties. AAA says most EV batteries are covered for eight to 10 years or up to 100,000 miles, and coverage typically kicks in if capacity falls below 70%. NerdWallet notes some automakers offer up to 10 years or 175,000 miles.
- Low failure rate. NerdWallet cites Recurrent data showing about 1.5% of roughly 15,000 plug-in EVs studied needed a battery replacement due to failure, not counting recalls.
- Long life. AAA says most EV batteries last eight to 15 years, and many still hold 70% to 80% of their charge after a decade.
Hybrids also have a 12-volt battery, often an AGM, which Jerry says powers control modules and accessories. It is priced like a regular car battery. We could not find a current, well-sourced national figure for replacing a hybrid’s high-voltage pack, so get a quote from a dealer or hybrid specialist if yours is failing.

How to pay less
- Check your current battery’s warranty first. If it failed early, read the terms before you pay for a new one.
- Compare installed prices. Labor ranges from about $39 to $117 at Jerry’s estimate, so ask each shop or store for the total, including disposal of the old battery.
- Buy the right type, not the priciest one. Match the type and size your owner’s manual lists. Extra power or a longer warranty adds about $20 to $60, per Jerry.
- Test before you replace. A slow start can also come from a loose or corroded connection or a charging problem, so have the battery tested first.
- Keep it healthy. Avoid leaving lights or accessories on with the engine off.
A dead battery is one of the smaller repair bills you will face. For the bigger picture, see the true cost of owning a car, and compare with our brake replacement cost and new tires cost guides.

Common questions
How long does a car battery last?
A regular 12-volt battery usually lasts about three to five years, according to both Jerry and AAA. Heat, short trips and electronics left on can shorten that.
Why are AGM batteries more expensive?
AGM and EFB batteries are heavier-duty designs that many newer cars use. Jerry notes they typically cost more than standard lead-acid batteries, and you should replace yours with the type your car calls for.
Do electric cars and hybrids have a regular battery too?
Yes. Jerry notes that hybrids and EVs still use a 12-volt battery, often an AGM, to run control modules and accessories. It is replaced like any other car battery and costs far less than the main drive battery.
Is an EV battery covered by warranty?
Usually, for a long time. AAA says most EV batteries carry warranties of eight to 10 years or up to 100,000 miles, and coverage typically applies if capacity drops below 70% during that period.
